What Is Endometriosis?
Endometriosis is a condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside of the uterus. This misplaced tissue can cause inflammation, scarring, and severe pain. It most commonly affects the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and pelvic lining—but it can also impact fertility and your overall quality of life.
Common Symptoms of Endometriosis
Endometriosis presents differently for each person, but many experience:
- Chronic pelvic or lower back pain
- Painful periods that worsen over time
- Pain with intercourse
- Pain with bowel movements or urination
- Heavy or irregular menstrual bleeding
- Difficulty getting pregnant
If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, don’t brush it off or wait to get answers. Discuss your pain with your provider right away.
InfertilityHow Is Endometriosis Diagnosed?
Your provider may begin with a pelvic exam and review of your medical history. However, the most accurate way to diagnose endometriosis is through a laparoscopy, a minimally invasive surgical procedure that allows your provider to view your internal pelvic organs directly.
Laparoscopy can confirm the presence and severity of endometrial growths and help guide your treatment plan. In some cases, a biopsy may also be performed during this procedure. Our providers take the time to explain every step and help you feel informed and supported throughout the diagnostic process.
Endometriosis Treatment Options
We offer a range of treatment options based on your specific symptoms, reproductive goals, and overall health:
Medication Management
- Hormonal birth control
- NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs)
- Other hormone therapies like GnRH agonists or antagonists
Minimally Invasive Surgery
If medication doesn’t provide enough relief or you’re trying to conceive, your provider may recommend surgery to remove endometrial tissue. This can reduce pain and improve fertility. Many of our providers offer laparoscopic procedures with faster recovery times and less disruption to your daily life.
