Menopause occurs naturally during a woman’s life. It can also be brought on if you’ve had a total hysterectomy. There are three phases of the menopause process.
The perimenopause phase may begin several years before your period ends completely. During perimenopause:
- You may have spotty menstrual cycles.
- You may experience hot flashes.
- Your body will be changing as it prepares for menopause.
Menopause is the time when your ovaries stop releasing eggs and stop producing most of their estrogen. During this time, your body will undergo a number of changes that a woman’s healthcare provider can help you manage. You will probably experience one or more of the following during menopause:
- Hot flashes
- Vaginal dryness
- Difficulty sleeping
- Night sweats
- An urgent need to urinate more frequently
- Dry skin
- Changes in your emotions, including mood swings and mild depression.
Post-menopause is basically the rest of your life after you have not had a period for 12 months. Your hot flashes and other symptoms may ease during this time, although some women experience these symptoms for many years.
Your Lifeline Medical Associates gynecologist may recommend treatment and can help you learn effective strategies for managing your symptoms, depending on your situation and medical history.
